Oil palm in Tanzania

Historically, oil palm cultivation has developed in the hottest and most humid areas of the globe. Today, new territories are joining this trend.
Tanzania is beginning its transition.
The country has strong agricultural potential, particularly in coastal and western regions such as Kigoma, Mbeya, and Pwani.
Although Tanzania is one of Africa’s leading consumers, it still lags far behind the major producers. The industry relies mainly on smallholders and artisanal units using local presses. Production therefore remains well below its potential.
Some key figures:
• National production estimated at 9,170 tons in 2026, compared to 8,790 tons in 2021
• Consumption projected at 220,000 tons in 2026, compared to 203,000 tons in 2021
Moderate production growth (+0.7%/year) coupled with heavy dependence on imports. High-quality, disease-resistant seeds with high yields, combined with good agricultural practices, will be essential to accelerate this growth.
Although there are many challenges, Tanzania’s future is full of promise.
